The power of six months: ‘I am today what I did six months ago’

What can you achieve or change in six months?

Recently I came across a saying (author unknown) that really resonated with me:

‘I am today what I did six months ago’

It’s a concise statement which reminds us that our present circumstances are shaped by the choices and actions we took in the past - whether personal growth, achievements or setbacks, our journey unfolds based on the decisions and steps we took earlier.

The saying struck a chord with me as it encapsulates neatly my belief in having goals and taking action to strive to make them happen. I know that along the way there will be challenges and changes, but that by taking action, I can make progress, learn, and grow.

And it was particularly timely as it’s now six months since I launched my new business offering growth consultancy to SME PR agencies. This was a pivot from my three-decade career as a practitioner and agency business builder, to offering strategic advice and practical support to others based on the rich experience I’ve gained through my career.

In Autumn 2023 I had no idea where I would get to in six months. But I was motivated to launch the venture, push it forward, and see what happened.

I’m thrilled to realise that in six months I’ve succeeded in establishing a thriving business. I am working with agency clients at various stages of the growth cycle – from start-up to scale-up to pre-sale planning. I’m working with brilliant people who are ambitious for their businesses to be bigger and better.  It’s a joy to work with each of them and I am beyond grateful that they’ve chosen to work with me.

And I’ve realised that there is a key connection between them and me – yes a desire to grow and improve, but critically, having the motivation to take practical steps to make that a reality.

Six months is a perfect timeframe to push forward and see results.  It’s short enough to make you focus on which actions should be priorities now to move towards your longer-term goals, and also long enough to see solid progress.

The truth is that any initiative you embark on today will move you from where you are right now – and if you keep pushing forward, even with incremental small steps, the results of that will be clear to see in six months’ time.

As I look ahead to six months from now, I have a much clearer picture of what I could achieve with my new business by then, based upon what I have done in the last six. Each step leads to the next.

If you look ahead six months to mid-Autumn 2024, do you have a picture of where you want to be or what you want to have achieved?

Making that picture happen is possible – the key is to take action now.
